TV Time

How psyched am I that NBC is running a marathon of The Office tomorrow night??? TimShady clued me in to this show about midway through the season, so I have some catching up to do. The couch awaits.

Last Days

Darryl and I had a peaceful Memorial Day. After Haywood and Robin left, we went to Barnes & Noble, Discover Mills Mall, and a driving range to hit a few golf balls. It was a good end to a fun weekend.

Not too much is going on this week; teachers have post-planning through Friday. Because the seniors finished last Tuesday, I've unofficially been in post-planning for a week already. Today I took on the task of taking inventory of books. It's as exciting as it sounds. I won't post the numbers here, but if you want a count of how many copies of The Scarlet Letter we have, just let me know. :)

What do IKEA, The Great Wall of Chocolate, and the Ocoee River have in common?

They are three things we conquered (or attempted to conquer) this weekend.

Two of our good friends, Haywood and Robin, stopped by for a couple of days on their way back from their 7-year anniversary getaway in North Georgia. When they arrived Saturday, one of the first items of business was to go to IKEA. I haven't been to IKEA since its opening week last year, and just like last time, I found it overwhelming but fascinating. I plan to go back on one of my days of leisure this summer and spend hours there just browsing.

We had dinner at PF Chang's, and Robin and I knew from the beginning that we would be taking on The Great Wall of Chocolate, which was delicious. Although this picture of me is terrible, I'm posting it anyway because it will be a great motivator for me to lose ten pounds this summer.

Sunday, we woke up e-a-r-l-y and traveled to the Ocoee River for some whitewater rafting. The ride there was an adventure in itself; I've never experienced such winding roads. Anyway, the Ocoee was fun. Darryl and I have really gotten into this rafting thing over the past few years, and we think it is always more fun when friends come along . . . today we had a blast. We were absolutely famished and stopped at the Smith House in Dahlonega on the way home for fried chicken, fried okra, mashed potatoes, pot roast, turnip greens, cornbread . . . you get the picture. While I always love food (as evidenced by the above picture with TGWOC), I think there is nothing better than a huge meal after a day on the water.

Anyway, here's a pic of the four of us at the rafting place. Good times!

Graduation!

Graduation was last night. Unfortunately, the students had to graduate in the gym instead of in the stadium because of the threat of rain, but the ceremony went on nonetheless.

The picture is really for my parents, who love snapshots of me in academic garb; I think it reassures them that the money they paid for my (expensive) education was well spent. The picture is of me and two of my teacher friends, Tim and Lynda. (FYI--If I look different, it is because my hair is straightened; not everyone has seen this "look." For some reason I have yet to understand, my straight hair causes quite a stir.)

(Technical note: I thought it would be cool to put the picture to the left, but now I don't like it and can't figure out how to fix it. I'm very new to all this.)

Genesis

Not the band or the first book of the Bible, but the beginning of this blog. I've been wanting to blog for some time now, but I wasn't really sure what my "focus" would be.

I had pretty much given up on this whole blog bit until one day when I was sitting in my classroom, listening to my seniors give their senior presentations. (Background info: At my school, seniors present on careers they are interested in pursuing.) More than several students mentioned that they wanted to teach because the hours are good and teachers have "lots of time off."

Just today, I was attempting to make an eye doctor appointment, and somewhere in the conversation, I mentioned that I am a teacher. To that, the receptionist replied, "I'm soooo jealous. I wish I had two months off!"

Along those same lines, I'm often asked what I do with all my vacation time. Last year, I was a bit embarrassed and frustrated by the fact that at the end of the summer, aside from a trip to Montana with my husband, I couldn't really think of what I did.

But this year is going to be different. My goal is to chronicle my summer vacation. If I do something remotely exciting, I'm going to post it. If I sit in the recliner and watch Gilmore Girls reruns all day, I'm going to post it. When someone asks what I did for my summer, I'm going to give them the link to this site, and when I can't remember what I've done . . . well, I'll have this blog to help me out.

Technically, my summer doesn't really start until June 3, but I will probably post some next week just to get the feel of this. Graduation is tomorrow night; doesn't summer really begin when the students are gone??
